About the Opportunity
The Attorney General’s Department is the lead agency for coordinating all South Australian Government interactions with the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide (“Royal Commission”). The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide was established on 8 July 2021. The inquiry will be led by Mr Nick Kaldas APM, former Deputy Commissioner of the New South Wales Police Force and will be supported by the Hon James Douglas QC and Dr Peggy Brown AO.
The Royal Commission will enquire into systemic issues and common themes related to defence and veteran death by suicide, including the possible contribution of pre-service, service, transition, separation and post-service issues, and other matters believed by the Royal Commission to be relevant to its inquiry.
The Senior Policy Officer is accountable to the Senior Project Manager, Royal Commission Response Units, for:
- Undertaking research and preparing and reviewing submissions on a variety of policy matters relevant to the Royal Commission.
- Preparing written reports, briefs, advice, responses to correspondence and ministerial briefings, delivering high quality project and business outcomes that meet agreed strategic objectives
- Ensuring a clear focus on the successful delivery of outcomes at all times.
The successful candidate will:
- Review, contribute and/or prepare submissions to the Royal Commission on behalf of SA Government agencies.
- Manage and review SA Government agency documentation for production to the Royal Commission.
- Review and analyse discussion papers, submissions and reports on policy issues relevant to the Royal Commission.
- Undertake research and prepare reports on complex policy issues relating to the delivery of services to veterans and individual defence personnel by the SA Government.
- Draft minutes and briefings on complex issues relevant to the Royal Commission.
- Contribute to Cabinet documentation on issues relevant to the Royal Commission.
- Watch livestreamed Royal Commission public hearings and prepare timely hearing and summary reports.
- Contribute to the coordination and preparation of corporate reporting and parliamentary briefings.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders across government.
- Consult stakeholders where appropriate with regard to delivery of project outcomes.

Special Conditions for Employment
