About the Opportunity
The ODPP is an office of approximately 155 staff, comprising both legal and administrative functions. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions was established through the Director of Public Prosecutions Act, 1991 to provide an effective, fair and independent criminal prosecution service for the people of South Australia. The Office is committed to the highest ethical and professional standards.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has a number of term vacancies (of up to 6 months) for solicitors within the Office, ranging from junior to middle level roles. Solicitors provide an effective contribution to the processing of legal matters throughout the South Australian Judicial system by preparing files for trial and through involvement in the conduct of those trials. As a solicitor in the ODPP, you will have daily interaction with legal and non-legal staff within the ODPP, as well as a wide range of external stakeholders including SAPOL, defence counsel, court officials, victims and witnesses. Your duties will include preparing ODPP files for prosecution, liaising with victims of crime and appearing in court on non-trial matters on the instructions of the Director in the Magistrates, District and Supreme Courts of South Australia.
The successful applicants duties will include:
- Preparing ODPP files for prosecution.
- Liaising with victims and witnesses
- Appearing on the instructions of the Director in the Magistrates Court, District Court and Supreme Court
- Actively participate in Office initiatives, projects and activities
- Knowledge of Court Procedures as related to the Supreme Court and other Tribunals
At the LEC1 and LEC2 level, the successful applicant would have the ability to analyse legal factual situations, research legal issues and be able to present arguments clearly and cogently. They would be able to weigh competing considerations, form a judgement and justify their decision. They would be motivated, work to high standards of precision and attention to detail.
At the LEC3 level, the successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to analyse legal factual situations, and a proven ability in the preparation of legal documents in the criminal jurisdiction. They will have demonstrated experience appearing in court in trial and/or pre-trial matters. They will be able to present arguments clearly and cogently. They are motivated, work to high standards of precision and pay attention to detail.

Essential Qualifications
- Admitted, or eligible for admission, as a practitioner of the Supreme Court of South Australia.
Special Conditions for Employment
Employment is dependent upon a National Police Certificate clearance and SA Police background check that the AGD finds satisfactory. Successful applicants will be will provided further information if an interview is requested. Forms are not to be lodged directly with SA Police (SAPOL) under any circumstances and any fees incurred by applicants in doing so will not be recoverable from the AGD.
- Some out of hours work will be required.
- Travel to country areas involving overnight absences may be required.
- Will be required to work in different teams within the ODPP Will be exposed, either directly or indirectly to confidential, sensitive, confronting and/or distressing material including photographs, written descriptions and other evidentiary material.
