About the Paralegal Pool (ASO3)
The Attorney-General's Department of South Australia has exciting opportunities for Paralegal Officers to join the Crown Solicitor's Paralegal Officer pool based in Adelaide. This is an outstanding opportunity to work with a high profile legal team.
The Crown Solicitor’s Office, through the Attorney-General, provides legal services to government Ministers, agencies and departments, including legal advice, representation before courts and tribunals, negotiating of commercial contracts, drafting and production of legal documents, counsel for the conduct of summary prosecutions and Magistrates’ Appeals, native title claims management, land conveyancing and investigation services.
Successful applicants are placed in a pool and notified as suitable vacancies arise. Successful applications for the pool are valid for a period of twelve months for appointment to temporary positions.
Reporting to Solicitors and accountable to the Assistant Crown Solicitor, your main responsibility will be to provide an efficient law clerk service (subject to supervision).
More specifically, your day-to-day responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- legal research
- preparing letters, advices, outline of argument, affidavits and other documents
- assisting with conduct of trials and hearings
- assisting with the establishment and maintenance of legal precedents and templates, management of documentation, use of practice management and litigation support systems and the discovery process
- providing administrative support to solicitors as required

About the Summer Clerk Program 2021 (ASO1)
The Crown Solicitor’s Office (CSO) Summer Clerk Program offers law students an opportunity to gain practical legal experience within a government environment, and undertake work within a legal practice for an 8 week period. The CSO Summer Clerk Program is offered for a period of eight weeks each year, commencing in late November or December. Summer Clerkships conclude in time for students to attend the first Practical Legal Training Program offered by the Law Society.
Law students completing their final years of study are invited to apply for the CSO's summer clerk program. The CSO is interested in students who are high achievers in both their academic and personal lives, with good interpersonal skills, relevant work experience (including legal and non-legal), who are likely to be a good fit with the CSO and who can provide relevant reliable references.
The CSO Summer Clerk Program offers successful applicants the opportunity to take part in a structured program, including training and development sessions covering a range of legal and non-legal topics:
- Introduction to a state government agency.
- Tour of the Attorney-General's Department (AGD) library, and training in the use of on-line facilities.
- Training in drafting and legal research.
- Information session on practice management systems.
- File and matter management.
- Assisting in client matters, under supervision.
Students offered clerkships will be remunerated for the full eight weeks. Each summer clerk is allocated to a section within the CSO, or alternatively will be outposted by the CSO to various government agencies.

Special Conditions for Employment
Employment is dependent upon a National Police Certificate clearance that the AGD finds satisfactory. Successful applicants will be provided further information if an interview is requested. Forms are not to be lodged directly with SA Police (SAPOL) under any circumstances and any fees incurred by applicants in doing so will not be recoverable from the AGD.

- The Paralegal Officer and Summer Clerk may be assigned to work in any section of the CSO.
