About the Opportunity

The Office of the Public Advocate helps support the rights and needs of persons who have impaired decision-making capacity, including by acting as the guardian of last resort if appointed by the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The primary purpose of the Advocate/Guardian role is to work as a delegated guardian within the provisions of the Guardian and Administration Act 1993 (the Act), making decisions in relation to people under guardianship in areas including health, disability and aged care services, accommodation and safeguarding adults. In particular, section 5 of the Act contains specific principles in relation to how guardianship services are to be delivered.

This recruitment process relates to our need to fill a number of Advocate/Guardians roles on a casual basis during the next six months. Applicants will be advised if successful, and will  go into the pool for  consideration of casual roles that may arise.

 

Essential Qualifications

  • A tertiary qualification in social work or related allied health discipline, including psychology, occupational therapy, or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience working with vulnerable persons and their family members and/or carers or representatives.
  • Knowledge, experience and capacity to work positively in complex and sensitive situations that may involve some levels of conflict.
  • Demonstrated experience in areas that provide for the needs of vulnerable adults.
  • Experience in preparing detailed written reports and recommendations for a range of purposes.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work in a human rights framework, and the acceptance of relevant principles.

Special Conditions for Employment

Employment is dependent upon a National Police Certificate clearance that the AGD finds satisfactory. Successful applicants will be will provided further information if an interview is requested. Forms are not to be lodged directly with SA Police (SAPOL) under any circumstances and any fees incurred by applicants in doing so will not be recoverable from the AGD.

  • We are seeking to establish a committed casual pool of staff for the role of Advocate/Guardian. Casual roles may be available for up to twelve months, during which time temporary appointments may become available.
  • Some level of out of hours work and intra/interstate travel will be required for this role.
  • The work will require participation in after hours on-call roster, which may apply to periods covering daytime, overnight and/or weekends.
